Idar-Oberstein, May 23–25, 2025 – To mark the 50th anniversary of the full-time training centre of the German Gemmological Association (DGemG), more than 200 guests from Germany and abroad gathered in Idar-Oberstein over the weekend for a high-calibre international conference. Representatives of gemmological societies, renowned experts, and leading figures from the gemstone and jewellery industry in over ten countries participated in the two-day anniversary event, which offered a rich programme of scientific lectures, informal networking, and a festive Gemstone Party on Saturday evening.
The official opening on Saturday morning featured welcome addresses by State Secretary Petra Dick-Walther from the Ministry for Economy, Transport, Agriculture and Viticulture of Rhineland-Palatinate and Lord Mayor Frank Frühauf, who both highlighted the importance of the DGemG as a pillar of education and economic development in Idar-Oberstein.
In his keynote address, Dr. Gaetano Cavalieri, President of the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), emphasized the global relevance of gemmological education and the important contributions of the German Gemmological Association to the industry.
In his speech entitled “Gemmological Education: Key to Success in Today’s Business Environment”, Dr. Thomas Lind, President of the DGemG, underlined the growing need for in-depth gemmological knowledge as a key success factor in today’s fast-evolving gemstone and jewellery sector.
Additional expert speakers addressed current challenges and future perspectives in gemmology. A special welcome was extended to representatives of partner gemmological societies from the USA (GIA), United Kingdom (Gem-A), Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, and Sri Lanka.
A highlight of the weekend was the festive Gemstone Party held on Saturday evening at the training centre, where participants enjoyed live music, fine food, and drinks in a relaxed and joyful setting.
The DGemG looks back on five decades of excellence in gemmological education. With its unique combination of scientific rigour and close ties to the gemstone industry, the full-time training centre in Idar-Oberstein has grown into an internationally recognized centre of competence.
“This anniversary was not only a moment to reflect on the past, but also to look ahead with optimism — a strong signal for the continued advancement of high-level gemmological education in the decades to come,” concluded Dr. Tom Stephan, Managing Director of the DGemG and Head of the Training Centre.
