on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of our Training Centre, I am delighted to present the special
edition The Fascination of Gemstones, published as part of our journal Gemmology.
Since its founding, the German Gemmological Association (DGemG) has been committed to providing a
solid scientific foundation in the field of gemmology. At the same time, we recognize the growing importance
of modern, accessible communication with end consumers and partners within the industry. This
combination of scientific precision and contemporary communication shapes our identity and guides
our work — both in education and in the public representation of gemmology.
With The Fascination of Gemstone, we aim to showcase the beauty and diversity of the most important
gemstones in a way that is not only scientifically sound but also vivid and accessible. Our goal is to offer
professionals and interested readers alike a compact, informative overview that both conveys knowledge
and inspires a passion for the world of gemstones.

Details

Occurrences of opal in the Central American country Honduras are already known since the mid-19th century. Opals with and without playof-colour are found in volcanic rocks, especially in mostly strongly weathered andesites and in ignimbrites. Generally, white and light opals, partly with dendrites, brown to yellowish and dark matrix opals can be differentiated. The occurrences are located in the Departamento Lempira in the Region of Erandique. A new occurrence exists in the Departamento Ocotepeque, west of Lempira.

This article deals with the macro- to microscopical characterization of the different opal types from Honduras, their physical and chemical properties and micro-structures.
